1 Way Ticket To Australia

This is my blog following me through my adventures in Australia.

PARKLIFE!!

Went to Parklife Yesterday with my good friend Dez. It was amazing! It was an all day festival with five stages going off at the same time.  Like any festival the drinks were insanely expensive. 11 dollars for a rum and coke or 13 dollars for a redbull vodka. Thankfully this festival had a great system in order. Each cup was worth one dollar in recycling and you could get a coupon per each cup you got. Every time we wanted another drink we would just run around real quick and get 11 or 13 cups then go get ourselves a free drink. It was really awesome!  The weather started off terrible but was hardly noticeable once you were packed in the crowd in front of the stage. One of the best days I’ve had out here by far!

After spending roughly 160 hours over spring break, I finally finished my studio midterm project. Not a moment to spare either, I finished the project at 9:30 am and presentations started at 10. As the deadline started the get closer and closer I started spending more and more time in studio. 14 hour days quickly turned into 18 hour days and finally when there was only four days left i decided to pack a bag and literally lived in the studio. It wasn’t the most exciting spring break that ive had but it was definatley worth it, I am proud of the work that I produced. In my project there is a reason and purpose for everything that is implemented in the design, there are no ambiguities, no loose strings. I was extremely nervous when the presentations started. Ive noticed that emotions run deeper when you haven’t slept for 3 days in a row. As more and more people presented I started to feel more excited than nervous to present. With the way that the room was set up a person would present in the front of the room and another person would set up there presentation in the back of the room. then when the person in the front of the room was finished presenting the audience would shift and the person in the back of the room would present. When I was pinning up my project in the back of the room it got a lot of attention. Half of the people in the audience turned around and just stared at my presentation. Other people from other sections were even coming over to look at my project. My presentation went well, I am very happy with the outcome of the project as a whole.

Though I didn’t get to go anywhere amazing over spring break Im getting that chance now. I leave today at 3:30 for Melbourne. Cant wait!

When in Lightning Ridge we went on a tour of a local opal mine. I thought it was going to be a normal mine like what ive seen before. This one was different, halfway down in the soft sandstone layer of the earth, one of the local miners/self proclaimed artists carved sculptures into the cavern walls. It was completely unexpected but really cool.

On the trip I got one of these little buggers stuck in the back of my leg. My mate Toni was kind enough to “help” me out. He tried to grab it to pull it out and got pricked by it. so then he tries taking a rock and scraping it off of my leg. Didnt work at all, it was pushing it more into my leg. Finally we found a stick and pried it out.. One of my mates had one go through the bottom of their shoe!  What a mean little cactus. View high resolution

For my architecture studio class it was mandatory that we went on a field trip to the proposed site for our project. The place that we went to is called Lightning Ridge. It is a opal mining city located in the outback 9 hours away from Sydney. (It was an extremely long bus ride) The exact number of people that live in Lightning Ridge is unknown. According to what the government knows, Lightning Ridge has maybe 200 citizens, but it is estimated that there are actually around 500 people living there. This is the place to go if your looking to get away from something such as paying taxes. Most of the people there live underground because of the extreme temperatures. It was an amazing place to go visit.
